Mercedes-Benz introduced the R107 in 1971 as a successor to the famous W113 ‘Pagoda’ and the third generation of their SL series. It was a huge success and went on to become their second longest production car, behind the G-Wagon. Production ceased in 1989 with over 250,000 models built.
The 420 SL was powered by a 4.2-litre M116 V8 engine delivering approximately 218 horsepower, paired with a smooth 4-speed automatic transmission. It offered a refined and comfortable driving experience, featuring a removable hardtop, folding soft-top, power windows, ABS brakes, and a well-appointed interior with leather and wood trim as an option. Positioned between the 300 SL and the more powerful 500 SL, it was primarily sold in European markets. Today, the 420 SL is appreciated by collectors for its balance of performance, classic styling, and build quality, with well-maintained examples becoming increasingly sought after due to their relative rarity.

First registered and delivered in the UK on 25th September 1987, this car is a late example and therefore benefits from galvanised body panels. The Astral Silver paintwork compliments the grey Leather, and this combination remains as specified from the factory.
